A Hospitality Interior Designed Around Its Landscape

ROKI Collection, Queenstown

ROKI Collection in Queenstown is home to Essence, New Zealand's only two Michelin star restaurant. Positioned against the lake and alpine landscape, the interiors rely on softness, warmth, and tonal balance rather than bold contrast.

In hospitality, the right finish does more than cover a surface. It shapes how a space is experienced, not just seen.

Softening Architectural Structure with Ceiling Colour

Within the penthouse areas, Resene Thorndon Cream was used to help soften the architectural ceiling structure and diffuse light more naturally throughout the space. The warmer undertone of the colour helped balance the timber detailing, textured furnishings, and natural daylight entering through the large glazed openings.

Creating Warmth and Calm Through Wall Finishes

For the bedroom walls, Resene Linen introduced a calm, muted warmth that aligned closely with the wider interior palette. In accommodation settings, colours like this are often selected because they create a quieter visual environment while still providing enough depth to avoid feeling flat or sterile. Against the layered fabrics, timber finishes, and softer lighting, the tone helped maintain a relaxed and refined feeling throughout the suites.

Why Ceiling Tones Matter in Hospitality Spaces

Bedroom ceilings were finished in Dulux Ohai, creating a subtle point of difference overhead while still remaining cohesive with the surrounding palette.

A ceiling tone done well goes unnoticed. Done poorly, it undermines everything beneath it.

Colour temperature plays a significant role in hospitality spaces. Warmer tones encourage rest and retreat. Cooler tones create energy and alertness. The specification should always follow the intent of the space.

Colours Used

The Result

ROKI Collection is a good example of what happens when colour selection, finish specification, and an understanding of the environment are all working together. The result is a space that feels intentional without drawing attention to the decisions that made it that way. The same attention to detail, now recognised at the highest level, with Essence holding New Zealand's only two Michelin stars.
