Fancy Cow Restaurant, Blenheim, Marlborough. Custom rust-effect paint system.
Fancy Cow is the kind of restaurant project that asks more from the painter than a paint chart can give. The design called for a finish that read as oxidised steel rather than as paint on plasterboard. We developed and applied a custom rust-effect paint system to deliver that intent, across the hero elevations of the restaurant in Blenheim.
The brief.
The Fancy Cow Sits within Marlborough Vintners, a multifunctional development on the winemaking golden mie in Blenheim. The development houses the office hub for Marlborough Vintners winery operations, a brewery and tasting space for DNA Brewing, a cellar door, a premium restaurant, and hospitality facility. Designed by JTB Architectures and delivered by Scotts Construction, the project scope required a specialist decorative system across both the exterior facade and key interior surfaces.
The work.
The work across the project was a customer rust-effective paint system, applied to both exterior and interior focal points using Porters Paints. On the exterior, the finish works against a darker architectural palette, softening the structural lines and giving the building a more grounded, distinctive presence from the roadside. Inside the same work continues across key focal points, adding depth and anchoring the experience of the space.
A rust-effect system of this kind is not a standard application. It requires layering, timing and an understanding of how the finish will develop as it is applied. Getting the product knowledge right before the job starts is what makes the result look effortless once it is finished.
The finish.
