Fancy Cow is the kind of restaurant project that asks more from the painter than a paint chart can give. The design called for a finish that read as oxidised steel rather than as paint on plasterboard. We developed and applied a custom rust-effect paint system to deliver that intent, across the hero elevations of the restaurant in Blenheim.

The brief.

The restaurant's design language is bold. The interior treats colour, material, and surface as part of the dining experience rather than as a backdrop. The brief asked for a wall finish that looked like aged, oxidised steel, with the depth, the variation, and the warmth that a real corroded metal surface develops over time.

Three constraints shaped the work. First, the finish itself. A rust-effect system is not a single coat. It is a layered build of base coat, reactive layer, and sealer, with the appearance of oxidation produced chemically rather than by aging. The build had to be rehearsed before any wall was committed. Second, the design intent. The rust effect needed to look like real rust, not like a decorative imitation of rust. Variation across the wall, deeper at certain points, lighter at others, with the grain and the patina reading as if the surface had been outside for a decade. Third, the substrate. The walls were standard interior plasterboard. The system had to bond to plasterboard and behave as if it were on metal.

The restaurant was preparing to open. The programme was short.

The work.

We started with sample boards. The system has three component layers: a base coat in a dark earth tone, a reactive iron-bearing layer applied wet-on-wet across the base, and a sealer coat applied after the reaction had developed. The boards rehearsed the application: how thick to apply the reactive layer, how long to leave it to develop before the sealer went on, and how to vary the application across a single area to produce the depth the design called for.

The design team signed off the sample boards in the restaurant under the actual lighting. Pendant lights, warm ambient, and the wall sconces that would sit alongside the finished walls. The lighting shifted the finish enough that the boards needed adjustment under the room's own conditions before the system rolled out across the elevations.

The substrate preparation was conventional but careful. Plasterboard checked for stopping defects. Any defect would carry through under a textured finish more visibly than under a flat one. Sanded back to a uniform surface. Sealed with a specified Resene primer compatible with the rust-effect base coat.

The system rolled out one elevation at a time. Two of our most experienced applicators worked the wet-on-wet stage, with the reactive layer applied across the base and then worked into variation while it was still wet. Brushwork, ragwork, and sponge application at different points of each elevation, with the depth varying across the wall to produce the real-rust character the design called for. The development time before the sealer went on was managed against the room's temperature and humidity; we adjusted between elevations as the conditions changed across the day.

Hand-cut detail at the boundaries, where the rust effect met the adjacent surface. No tape lines visible at the finish. The transition between the rust-effect elevations and the connecting walls was rehearsed and finished by hand.

The sealer locked the finish at the point the design team had signed off. The room was ready for the restaurant fit-out to take over.

The finish.

The walls do what the brief asked for. Read at distance, the finish is oxidised steel. Read up close, the depth and the variation are right; the surface looks aged rather than applied. Under the restaurant's lighting, the warm-and-cold variation across each elevation moves the way real rust does.

Decorative work like this is where commercial painting crosses into something closer to craft. The discipline of the rust-effect build is in the rehearsal and the restraint, not in the finished day. We think the room reads the way the designers proposed it.
