Toast and Oak is a wine bar and restaurant in Queenstown where the design called for a finish with the patina of an old European trattoria rather than the flatness of a contemporary repaint. We applied Porter's French Wash in a custom shade over Porter's Low Sheen 'Oaten' through the main dining space to deliver that finish.
The brief.
Toast and Oak is a wine bar and restaurant in the heart of Queenstown. It is a restaurant that feels refined, welcoming and genuinely personal, operated by a group of hospitality professionals from Italy, France, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand. The Finesse Team were set out to complete the specialist decorative finishing throughout.
The work.
With the direction from Studio Muse, a French Wash in Mudpack over Porter's Low Sheen Oaten was applied across the main dining space, introducing warmth and texture. An impasto feature wall in Porter's Sediment in the Private Dining Room added depth and a tactile quality suited to a more intimate setting. Elitis wallpaper from the Bois Sculpte range was used as a considered feature element, adding a layer of craft that sits behind the experience rather than in front of it. Each finish was chosen to contribute to how the space feels rather than how it looks by itself. That distinction matter in hospitality environments, where guest experience is influenced by the details they notice without realising it.
The finish.
The finishing work Finesse delivered was never meant to draw attention to itself. It was meant to sit quietly behind the experience and hold the space together. That is what specialist decorative finishing looks like when it is done properly.
